PetSmart and PetSmart Charities are holding adoption events across the country this weekend.
Estimates put the number of kittens to be born this spring at 20 million.
“As a result, the waiting rooms of veterinary clinics, animal welfare agencies, rescues and shelters are overrun with people holding boxes of unplanned litters of homeless kittens. It’s challenging to find the resources, volunteers and finances to provide food, shelter, vaccinations and veterinary care to so many kittens during such a short amount of time, not to mention finding them the forever homes they deserve,” says Steven Kaufman, a certified animal welfare administrator and center of excellence manager for adoptions at PetSmart Charities.
To help these helpless creatures, 1,500 PetSmart stores across the country are hosting special adoption events today through Sunday, with the goal of finding homes for more than 24,000 adoptable pets. If you adopt at a store, you will receive a kit that includes helpful information, plus more than $475 in free items and discounts on pet essentials and services. If you adopt elsewhere this weekend, you can still get a kit by showing adoption papers.
Full up at your house? Consider taking part in PetSmart’s Pet Supply Drive through May 28. Simply purchase and donate supplies at a store to have them delivered to a local animal welfare group. You can also take part in the Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™ program through Dec. 31, which gives one meal to a pet in need for every bag of dog or cat food purchased in stores and online.
