Make This Puppy Lucky: Mama Heart the Shepherd-Lab Mix

She was rescued with her puppies on Valentine’s Day last year.

Mama Heart is a smart, playful girl who has never met a stranger.  True to her name, she is a loving, happy pup who enjoys snuggling and planting kisses on her favorite people. And will you get a load of those adorable bunny ears?

Age and sex: 2 year and 6 month-old female.

Breed: Shepherd and Labrador mix.

Size and weight: Medium and 40 pounds.

Coat: Short, brown.

Location: Gateway Pet Guardians.

Activity level: Medium.

Likes: Chewing on her Kong, solving doggie puzzles, belly rubs, playing fetch, and taking naps.

Dislikes: Heavy storms, new places, being left behind by her people.

Training: Heart is crate and house trained; walks well on a leash; and knows sit, down, touch, shake, off, wait, and here. She can be reactive to squirrels and other dogs, but her foster mom has been working with her and she’s making good progress. Since she’s so smart, responsive, and incredibly food-motivated, Heart really enjoys training games!

Yard requirements: A fenced-in yard is not required as long as she is given frequent daily walks, although Heart would love an enclosed space where she could run around freely.

Children: Heart loves kids and understands she needs to be gentler around them than with adults. However, because she is very tuned in to the dynamic of those around her, she may play inappropriately when energy levels are heightened. Because of this, Heart should be supervised around children.

Dogs and cats: She would do best as the only pet.

Health issues: Heart is on supplements and medication to treat anxiety.

Her story: Discovered as a stray, Mama Heart was rescued with her seven puppies on Valentine’s Day 2015. She had been tracked for several weeks by her rescuers, who knew she had recently given birth and wanted to find her home base and puppies before the temperatures dropped. Once they discovered her living in a community member’s backyard, they were able to rescue Heart and her babies and bring them to safety.

Her ideal forever home: Heart is an affectionate, loving dog who just wants to be at her person’s side. An energetic and clever girl, Heart would do best in an active home with people willing to add enrichment to her regular routine, as she is happiest when she has a task to perform. She would do best with a family who can not only give her lots of love but also be firm with her when necessary to make sure her manners continue progressing in a positive direction.
